Newcastle fans have taken to Twitter to react after the Club posted a photo of Demba Ba at St James’ Park for the Newcastle Foundation awards dinner.
What’s the story?
Well, a number of Newcastle icons were invited back to Tyneside for this special evening, in which a number of supporters were recognised for their achievements.
One of them was Ba, a man who became a hero amongst the Toon Army for scoring the goals to fire Newcastle into the Europa League.
The Senegal international scored 16 goals in 34 Premier League games in the 2011/12 campaign to fire the Magpies to fifth.
Then, Ba scored 15 goals in 34 Premier League games the following season, albeit two coming for Chelsea after he made a January move to London.
Despite leaving, the 36-year-old remains a fan favourite on Tyneside, something that is clear to see in the reaction below.
Newcastle need a Demba Ba in January
Despite the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia’s riches, Newcastle are still in a very dangerous position in the Premier League.
The Magpies sit five points from safety, and are yet to win a game in the Premier League this season after 11 attempts – the only winless side.
As a result, Eddie Howe, somehow, needs to find someone to replicate Ba’s impact on Tyneside.
In truth, Papiss Cisse would be a more appropriate comparison.
Ba’s fellow countryman arrived in January 2012, and remarkably went on to score 13 goals in 14 Premier League games.
It was the kick Newcastle needed to reach the Europa League.
Now, someone new, or someone already at the club, needs to give Howe’s side a similar boost, or relegation could be on the cards.
