Ian Wright thinks the corner that led to Declan Rice’s winning goal for Arsenal against Manchester United on Sunday at the Emirates was ‘dubious’.

For the second season running, Arsenal beat their old rivals in stoppage-time, with Declan Rice being the hero this time after he chested down a lofted ball, following a corner, before his effort squirmed into the back of the net following a deflection.

But Manchester United felt that Mikel Arteta’s side shouldn’t have had a corner, in the first place, with Wright in agreement that it was controversial, as he told Premier League Productions (03/09/23 at 6:35 pm).

It was a shot from Martin Odegaard, which was deemed to have deflected off Christian Eriksen, that led to the corner.

After Alejandro Garnacho’s goal was ruled out for offside, the home side kept banging on the door with corner after corner.

And, in the end, they blew the house down and secured a valuable three points in their quest to win the Premier League title this season.

“When got a bit of luck with that offside because it was very, very close,” said Wright. “Then Declan came up with the goal right at the death with that corner, which is a dubious corner, I am hearing.”

Big moment for Rice

At West Ham United, Rice was the defensive brain of the team, so he would play much deeper than he is doing at the Emirates now.

But he has been given the freedom to get forward a lot more and now the goals have started.

That was one big criticism of the England international, well, he has started life in a brilliant fashion with that strike and he will be hoping there will be more goals to come.
