
Gini Wijnaldum has had a mixed season with Liverpool so far.
But it’s a very different story at international level.
The Netherlands midfielder maintained his fantastic form for his country by scoring twice in a Nations League win over Bosnia & Herzegovina tonight.
In doing so, Wijnaldum, a £25 million signing by Liverpool in 2016, has now scored 12 goals in his last 19 games for his country.
And there was something quite touching about his second of the game today.
As the 30-year-old wheeled away after tapping into an empty net, he celebrated by placing a hand just beneath his chin.
The celebration looked very similar to what Virgil van Dijk does after scoring and, given his compatriot’s situation, it’s very possibly a tribute.
Van Dijk won’t kick a ball for Liverpool again this season after suffering ligament damage in a draw with Everton last month.
