Liverpool are enduring their worst start to a Premier League season in quite some time, and their poor form has led to some questions about Jurgen Klopp’s future as the Reds’ manager.
The German has only just signed a new deal, but with the Merseyside club struggling at the moment, there are questions surrounding whether or not his departure could be on the horizon.
Writing for Sky Sports, Paul Merson has given his verdict on this situation, and while he’s not given a timeframe on when Klopp will go, he’s stated that he is absolutely certain that this decision will be in the manager’s hands when the time comes.
Klopp’s decision
Merson said that Klopp will only go when he decides it’s time to.
“Will Klopp be thinking he’s taken Liverpool as far as he can? I’m not sure, but one thing I am certain of is that it will ultimately be his decision. Liverpool have to keep him but whenever the time comes to make a decision, it will be his,” Merson wrote.
Klopp is an elite manager, he’s not in the job to finish fourth in the league, for those kind of managers that is not success.
Klopp will want change. I don’t think he has been backed that much, yes, they spent £85m on Darwin Nunez but that was one player, they need a few more if they are going to get back to where they were.
What Klopp has done at Liverpool, winning the league after all those years, is hard work. He has worked his socks off, he kicks every ball on the touchline. Just like players, Klopp will be getting tired, and you get more tired when you are not winning games compared to when you are winning.
Earned it
There aren’t many managers in world football that you would describe as ‘sack proof’ but Jurgen Klopp is one of them.
In his seven years at Liverpool, Klopp has absolutely transformed this club, and he’s more than earned the right to decide when his job is done.
Is that time on the horizon? That remains to be seen, but the Liverpool board would be risking a huge backlash if they decided to get rid of Klopp a single second before he decided it was time to go.
Klopp should be the Liverpool manager for as long as he wants to be.
