Liverpool could have a difficult time defending their Premier League title this season.
Well, winning it back-to-back is a very difficult task these days regardless and has only been done once in 11 years – by Manchester City in 2018 and 2019.
But it could be a little more difficult this season by virtue of the fact that after eight games, it’s clear that anybody can beat anybody.
Jurgen Klopp’s side are third in the table, one point behind Leicester City at the summit and one clear of Southampton in fourth.
The Reds have also been on the receiving end of a 7-2 mauling by Aston Villa, who were demolished by Leeds United, who were thrashed by Crystal Palace.
It’s often said about the Premier League that anybody can beat anybody but this looks particularly true so far in the 2020-21 campaign.
But Alan Shearer, writing in his column on BBC Sport, expects the cream to rise to the top sooner or later, claiming he is ‘certain’ that Liverpool and Manchester City will occupy the top two places again – but he couldn’t say in what order.
He said: “Their big set-back this season was obviously the 7-2 defeat against Aston Villa, which was a result that shocked everyone – but it’s notable that they have not lost in seven games since.
“They can still terrify teams when they pour forward and, like City, they are not going away anytime soon. This season may be unpredictable, but one of them will end it as champions, I am certain of that.”
