After it was recently confirmed that Southampton had shown Ralph Hassenhuttl the marching orders, the club have confirmed Nathan Jones as his successor via Twitter on Thursday.
The former Luton Town manager has been handed a long-term contract till 2026 at St. Mary’s.
While the Welsh tactician is a relatively unknown commodity in the English top-flight, one of the prime factors behind his appointment remains the brilliant job he did at Luton.
Taking over a side that were languishing at 19th in the Championship, Jones guided the club to 12th and 9th placed finishes in the following seasons.
Currently as well, the club are sitting comfortably in 9th place in the second tier of English football.
However, the prospect of managing a struggling Saints side in easily the toughest division in the world in the Premier League is a completely different kettle of fish.
Nathan Jones has discussed how he is embracing the challenge, as he looks forward to taking over the helm at Southampton.
“I know a lot about the club from back in the days at the Dell, to coming here to St. Mary’s and it’s a wonderful football club”, he said in his first interview with the club.
Jones continued, “A lot of my family are Southampton fans, which doesn’t half help and I feel really, really proud to be given the opportunity, and I’m really looking forward to get started.”
“Obviously, I wanted to manage in the Premier League, I’ve dreamt of that since I’ve become a coach or a manager but this club in particular, because of how it’s run, because of the structure, because of how they look deeper than just results really appeals to me.”
With Nathan Jones seeming up for the task, Southampton fans certainly have plenty to be excited about on the face of things.
