Don Hutchison has urged Everton to appoint Graham Potter as their next manager by claiming that he backed him for the Tottenham and Arsenal jobs, as he told PL Productions (17/01/22 at 1:25 pm).

The former Everton midfielder stated that when the Tottenham job came up, he thought Potter was good enough for the role and he also felt that he was the man for the job when Mikel Arteta was struggling at Arsenal.

After Everton sacked Rafa Benitez on Sunday, a number of names have been thrown about for the new role, including that of Potter’s.

The Brighton boss has been praised for the progressive football he has played at the Amex Stadium and the improvements he has made with individual players.

Given the qualities Potter has in his managerial locker, it would be a surprise if those in the Goodison Park boardroom don’t even consider him.

But it seems as though Hutchison wants him on Merseyside, as he explained that Everton are ‘on another level’ compared to Brighton.

“He has been on the up for the last 18 months,” said Hutchison. “When the Tottenham job came up, I thought, Graham Potter. At Arsenal, before Arteta and when Arteta was struggling, I thought Potter.

“I have a feeling if he doesn’t move soon, then it might be a case of like Sean Dyche, maybe he has lost his opportunity to go to an Everton.

“No disrespect to Brighton, but Everton are on another level. If he went to Everton, he would change everything.

“He would change the culture. He would change the mentality. He improves players. Give them self-confidence. He’s not cold, but approachable. Every time you listen to him, it makes sense.”

One thing Everton fans know for sure and that’s Duncan Ferguson is sitting in the hot seat until he is told otherwise.

There will be some who feel that he should be the one given the role on a permanent basis given his association with the club.

Given the big-name managers Everton have gone through, from Roberto Martinez to Carlo Ancelotti.

Perhaps the answer to all of their problems has been staring them right in the face in the form of a former hard-hitting striker from Scotland.
