Atletico Madrid’s La Liga winger Gelson Martins has been linked with Hutchison’s former club Everton amongst other Premier League sides.

Three Premier League clubs are apparently willing to offer Gelson Martins an escape route out of Atletico Madrid before the end of the month – but West Ham United are conspicuous by their absence.

According to The Chronicle, Everton are interested in signing the Portugal winger on loan while Newcastle United have entered talks over a potential loan deal until the end of the season.

And Mundo Deportivo, rather inevitably, have added Wolverhampton Wanderers into the mix. Martins’ international team-mates Rui Patricio, Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho are already playing at Molineux.

Now, if Don Hutchison is to be believed, Martins is a player with massive potential, a winger capable of following in the footsteps of fellow Sporting Lisbon alumni Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani.

And, reacting on Twitter to speculation, Hutchison has dropped a bombshell which could leave West Ham fans holding their heads in their hands.

With Andriy Yarmolenko injured and Marko Arnautovic, Lucas Perez and Javier Hernandez all facing uncertain futures, joining the race for the fleet-footed Martins perhaps wouldn’t be a bad idea for The Hammers.

But, if Hutchison is to be believed, it seems that they have missed their opportunity to bring one of the brightest stars in Portuguese football to the London Stadium.

Just imagine if he starts at Everton, Newcastle or Wolves; West Ham could be left very red-faced.
