Mats Hummels says Arsenal weren’t after his signature this summer.

Quoted by ESPN, Germany defender Mats Hummels has claimed that Arsenal did not try to sign him from Borussia Dortmund this summer.
The 27-year-old centre-back left Signal Iduna Park to join Dortmund’s bitter Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich.

Arsenal had been linked with Hummels on and off for a few years it seems, and with manager Arsene Wenger in need of a central defender, it was wondered whether the Frenchman would move for the World Cup winner.
But Hummels has unequivocally stated that the Gunners did not want him, revealing that no offer was made by the North London outfit.
“I don’t have to beat about the bush, and pretend they [Arsenal] wanted me,” he via ESPN. “There was no offer.”

But should they have tried?
Wenger does not exactly boast an arsenal of excellent centre-backs: Per Mertesacker is aging and inconsistent; Gabriel – who doesn’t speak English – is something of a disaster; Calum Chambers is wholly unproven and Laurent Koscielny also has an error in him.
Arsenal have gone 12 years without winning the Premier League and that wait will only go on unless the 66-year-old manager rectifies glaring deficiencies at the back.
