The 17-year-old is one of two options to replace the injured Andy Robertson at left-back.

When Josh Tymon was born in May 1999, Hull City had just finished 21st in the fourth tier of English football and avoided relegation out of the Football League by just five points.

Just over 17 years on, the youngster is set to make his Premier League bow for the Tigers against Stoke City this weekend. First choice left-back Andy Robertson picked up a calf injury in the 6-1 defeat at Bournemouth last weekend, leaving the door open for Tymon.

Speaking to the club’s official website prior to the match, City boss Mike Phelan refused to confirm that the prospect would start but admitted he is one of two options.

“One option would be to change the system, the other is to select between a young player in Josh Tymon and Sam Clucas who has played in that position before,” Phelan said.

“Josh is a young player and we all like to see young players coming through, but there has to be a calculation before you put them in,” he continued. “It’s a call I have to make.”

The young left-back has tasted first team action on three previous occasions in cup competitions. Tymon started the FA Cup games at Bury and Arsenal last season and played the first 32 minutes of August’s EFL Cup win at Exeter City before being withdrawn through injury.

An enforced change on the left hand side of the defence may not be the only switch Phelan chooses to make having seen his side cut apart on the south coast last weekend.

Michael Dawson is back in contention and could start at centre-back, though the Tigers remain without a raft of first team players including Dieumerci Mbokani, Allan McGregor, Moses Odubajo, Alex Bruce, Greg Luer and Brian Lenihan.

Phelan’s side have already defeated this weekend’s opponents Stoke this season in the EFL Cup, but the Potters earned their first league win of the season at home to Sunderland last time out and will make the journey north confident of adding to their points tally against a potentially vulnerable home side.
