Should Hull City look to sign the ex-Newcastle United man if Leonid Slutsky is appointed?
Hull City are set to win the race to apponit former CSKA Moscow boss Leonid Slutsky as Marco Silva’s replacement at the KCOM Stadium.
The Championship club are in “pole position” get the 46-year-old according to The Hull Daily Mail.
If he does get the job then Slutsky’s first job should be to reunite with Seydou Doumbia.
English football fans will be familiar with the name after the 29-year-old striker endured a horrendous loan spell at Newcastle United back in 2016, making just three substitute appearances in five months with the North-East giants.
That being said, he was signed during Steve McClaren’s tenure and it is fair to say that very few Newcastle boys covered themselves in glory when he was there.
If he comes back to England then not only would he be competing in a somewhat easier league in terms of standard, he would also be reunited with the manager who seemed to get the very best out of him.
Under Slutsky at CSKA, Doumbia netted 95 times in 150 appearances for the club (according to Transfermarkt) in a superb five-year spell in the Russian capital.
The Ivorian, who netted 20 league goals in 15 starts for Basel this past season, also has 26 European goals under his belt – 17 of which were in the Champions League.
He has the pedigree to do damage in the Championship and Hull fans should be excited about the idea of him working alongside Slutsky again, if it happens.
