Hull City’s Andrew Robertson would be worth every penny at Celtic

Celtic would likely have to pay a club-record fee to re-sign former youth player Andrew Robertson from Hull City this summer.

Just two days after reports emerged linking Celtic with a move for Leeds United’s out-of-contract left-back Charlie Taylor, it appears that the homegrown 23-year-old is set to sign a deal elsewhere.

The Daily Mail claim that Burnley have taken advantage of West Brom’s dawdling and are on the verge of sealing a deal.

Baggies boss Tony Pulis had hoped to avoid going to a tribunal and being forced to pay a large compensation fee for a player reared in Leeds’ academy but it appears that The Clarets are more than willing to shell out the expected £5 million.

However, while this leaves West Brom frustrated, it also forces Celtic to consider alternative options. Despite boyhood fan and rising-star Kieran Tierney expected to stay at Parkhead, and long-serving understudy Emilio Izaguirre inking a one-year contract extension, it seems manager Brendan Rodgers wants a new left-back.

Links with Taylor followed reports in The Mirror that Bristol City flyer Joe Bryan was also on Celtic’s radar.

However, with West Brom using their disappointment to fuel a move for Hull City’s Andrew Robertson, you wonder whether Celtic will do the same.

Hull are expected to cash in on the 23-year-old following their relegation from the Premier League last season and a number of top flight clubs have been linked with the cultured left-sider. However, the 15-time Scotland international, who made his name at Dundee United, would be a fine addition for Celtic.

He joined the club as a schoolboy before being released at the age of 15 but there’s little doubt he’d make the grade this time around. An energetic outlet on the flank, Robertson has a wand of a left foot and orchestrated many a Hull attack from out wide last season.

Under the guidance of Brendan Rodgers, Robertson could evolve into one of the best Scottish players of his generation.

The problem, however, could be the fee. The Sun claims Robertson is valued at £8 million – a price that would make him Celtic’s club record signing. Yet, at the age of just 23 and with a bright future ahead of him, he could be worth every penny.
