Hull’s stunning start to the season has been checked by three successive defeats to the Premier League elite, but Robert Snodgrass is making no excuses.
Hull City winger Robert Snodgrass has told the Hull Daily Mail that he wants to see a change in mentality from his team mates after suffering the reality check of three successive defeats.
Hull endured a turbulent summer after winning promotion back to the Premier League, disputes over the club’s future and a potential takeover leading to the departure of manager Steve Bruce and a number of key players.
This only served to exacerbate the problems posed by a succession of long-term injuries to the likes of Allan McGregor and Michael Dawson (below).
However, caretaker manager Mike Phelan presided over a dream start to the season with wins against Swansea and champions Leicester before successive defeats to Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool brought the Tigers back down to earth.
And Scotland international Snodgrass, who has been one of Hull’s most impressive performers so far, has demanded that his team-mates react strongly in winnable upcoming fixtures against Bournemouth, Stoke and Watford after collapsing in the second half against Chelsea.
“We did well for 45 minutes but in the second half it was below our standards as a team. We know that,” Snodgrass (below) told the Hull Daily Mail.
“It’s different to the Championship and we have to change the mentality quickly. It’s been a very tough month for us but we move on and get ready for the games ahead.”
“We’ll roll our sleeves up and get ready for the battle. Right now we’re in the bottom half of the table and it’s only us that can change it.”
Hull were widely tipped for an immediate return to the second tier after the optimism following their promotion was stripped away during a nightmare off-season, but a number of hard-fought results has raised hopes of an unexpected survival.
However, the club cannot afford more capitulations like against Chelsea or the first half versus Liverpool (below).
Keeping eleven players on the pitch would help to. In two of Hull’s last three games, they had a man sent off for a handball on the goal line.
