Hull City are currently 18th in the Premier League, whilst Leeds United climbed to 9th in the Championship yesterday with a win over Burton Albion.
David Meyler scores for Hull City against Liverpool
Hull City succumbed to a sixth consecutive Premier League defeat yesterday at the hands of Watford. It was a much improved showing defensively compared to the shambolic performances against Bournemouth and Stoke, but the Tigers were still unable to tame a Hornets team who failed to get a single shot on target.
They were unable to do so due to an 83rd minute own goal from Michael Dawson. A cruel blow for Mike Phelan and his men, who desperately need to stop the rot, and could find themselves 3 points adrift of safety once this weekends games are done.
David Meyler took to Twitter following the game, lamenting the team’s misfortune and stating, ‘We stick together and keep going.’ It was a stock tweet from a footballer following defeat, something which has been the cause of parody following Victor Anichebe’s humiliating social media fail only last week.
Meyler mocked Leeds United’s lack of Premier League football
One reply to Meyler’s tweet came from a Leeds United fan, putting to the Irish international that there was ‘ONLY 1 TEAM IN YORKSHIRE’ (all in caps and followed by a series of crying laughing emojis), to which the 27-year-old replied by mocking Leeds’ lack of Premier League football.
‘Only one Yorkshire team in the Premier League!’, came the reply from Meyler, who has been a Hull City player since first joining the club on-loan from Sunderland in 2012. This is the fifth season Meyler has spent at the KCOM Stadium, the third of which has been spent in the Premier League and the other two having been promotions from the Championship.
During that time, Yorkshire rivals Leeds United have failed to even finish in the top half of the Championship, and it’s a gulf which Meyler was quick to remind the Leeds fan attempting to troll him.
Some Leeds United fans will never have seen the team in the Premier League
Leeds’ Premier League exile currently stands at 12 years, 3 of which were spent in League One and promotion hasn’t seemed a realistic prospect for a number of years. Victory against Burton yesterday saw the club rise to ninth in the Championship though, with 8 wins from their last 11 games in all competitions.
It is that form which has given Leeds supporters some cause for optimism, and Garry Monk certainly seems to be getting the best out of his players. Promotion would still be a steep task given the competitiveness of the Championship this season, but signs of progress are clear.
Three points yesterday was crucial for Monk’s men, with a tough run of fixtures coming up. Leeds’ next 6 games will see them travel to Norwich, Liverpool and Brighton, with home ties against Newcastle and Aston Villa. If the Whites can take 7 points from their next 5 league games, Garry Monk would probably be a happy man.
Hull City are struggling in the Premier League
Hull City, meanwhile, are now feeling the full effects of a disastrous pre-season. The departure of Steve Bruce twinned with a shocking lack of transfer activity saw the Tigers start the season woefully unprepared, taking on Premier League champions Leicester City with just 13 fit senior players on the opening day of the season.
Despite that, Mike Phelan’s men picked up 7 points from their first 4 games, but are now without a league win since the second week of the season away at Swansea. Their next three fixtures against Southampton, Sunderland and West Brom could well define their season even at this early stage.
Both Hull City and Leeds United are through to the quarterfinals of the EFL Cup, and if the pair can somehow navigate their ways past Liverpool and Newcastle, they could setup a tasty all-Yorkshire semi-final.
