We asked Hull City fans to vote on who the club’s most disappointing signing was, and the people have spoken.
Jimmy Bullard upon his arrival at Hull City
Earlier this week, we began our series of Hull City polls by asking supporters who they felt had been the club’s most disappointing signing of the last decade in terms of failing to live up to the hype and expectation surrounding the player upon their arrival.
The 10 players to be nominated were Hatem Ben Arfa, Gaston Ramirez, Jimmy Bullard, Tom Ince, Nick Proschwitz, Aaron McLean, Seyi Olofinjana, Kamel Ghilas, Jozy Altidore and Peter Halmosi.
Every single nominee received at least one vote, but two players received a combined total of 71% of the overall vote. The top three are below:
Hull City great and not so great – James Chester and Nick Proschwitz
3. Nick Proschwitz (9%)
The most expensive signing of Steve Bruce’s first summer in charge of Hull City, Nick Proschwitz was supposed to be the answer up front for the Tigers. The top scorer in the German second tier the season before his arrival, Proschwitz failed to adapt and settle in, with Jay Simpson and Sone Aluko ending up as Bruce’s preferred strike partnership. He scored a total of 3 goals in 29 games.
2. Jimmy Bullard (29%)
With almost 30% of the overall vote, Jimmy Bullard was a popular choice as Hull City’s most disappointing signing of the last decade. Bullard arrived in East Yorkshire from Fulham for £5 million, a club record at the time, but injuries plagued his time at the club, and reported off-field issues left the Tigers fans with a bitter taste in the mouth for the midfielder.
1. Hatem Ben Arfa (42%)
Hatem Ben Arfa in a rare outing for Hull City
The winner, and by some distance too, of the overall vote was the mercurial talent that is Frenchman Hatem Ben Arfa. One of the game’s most gifted individuals, Ben Arfa joined Hull on a season-long loan from Newcastle United, where he had fallen out with Alan Pardew. Unfortunately, things didn’t work out any better with Steve Bruce, and after a shameful performance away at Manchester United, Ben Arfa was never seen again at the KCOM Stadium.
