Now he has chosen to drop back down to the Championship to join Newcastle United, after the Magpies activated his release clause.

The decision to drop divisions may seem an odd one, but Newcastle are a huge club and Rafa Benitez is a top manager, and many would fancy them to be back in the Premier League next season at Hull’s expense.
The Tigers are without a manager at present after Steve Bruce quit just weeks before the season kicked off.
Hull club captain Curtis Davies reached out on Twitter last night to pay tribute to Diame’s contribution for the club, and express his disappointment that he has gone.
It is a tricky time for Hull who at this point would surely take 17th place, but with the season kicking off against reigning champions Leicester City, it might be about to get a lot harder before it gets better.
A new manager will settle the squad, and potentially bring in new faces before the end of the transfer window, and finding a replacement for Diame should be top of the list.
