Frank Lampard has criticised Tottenham Hotspur and France international goalkeeper Hugo Lloris on BBC One (8:54pm, June 23, 2021).

The former Chelsea midfielder and manager was not impressed by the way Tottenham goalkeeper Lloris conceded the first penalty during France’s Euro 2020 game against Portugal on Wednesday evening.

What happened with Hugo Lloris?

Lloris – who cost Tottenham £8 million in transfer fees in 2012, according to The Daily Mail – conceded a penalty during France’s game against Portugal in the European Championship last night.

While aiming to clear the ball, the 34-year-old goalkeeper appeared to punch Danilo Pereira.

The Frenchman appeared to touch the ball, but the Portuguese star did feel the full force of the Spurs goalkeeper’s fist.

What Frank Lampard said

Lampard said on BBC One (8:54pm, June 23, 2021): “I think goalkeepers have been given leeways for years to come and catch things, have their knee up.

“But when you are punching and you come out at that sort of speed, and you maybe get a bit of the ball, but you go through the player, dangerous play.”

No malice intended

It was a clear penalty, and the match officials were right in giving Portugal a spot kick.

Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo did not make any mistake in successfully converting it.

However, Lloris did not mean to hurt Danilo.

Yes, it looked very dangerous, but the 34-year-old was trying to punch the ball away.

Danilo was just unlucky that Lloris’s fist landed on him.

There was clearly no malice intended from Lloris.
