Hugo Lloris staying grounded on Tottenham title charge, hails defensive strength

Spurs made a huge statement by beating undefeated Manchester City 2-0 at White Hart Lane on Sunday.

Tottenham Hotspur captain Hugo Lloris has refused to fuel talk of a title charge, but hailed his side’s defensive strength and high-intensity playing style, as reported by the Guardian.

Spurs made a huge statement to the rest of the Premier League on Sunday by beating previously-undefeated Manchester City 2-0 at White Hart Lane.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side are now the only team in the top flight yet to taste defeat, and their Champions League reverse against Monaco is their only loss from 10 fixtures in all competitions.

The North London side’s early-season form, along with the win over City, have sparked increasing talk that they could improve upon last season’s third-placed finish.

However, though Lloris hailed his side’s defensive strength and high-pressure style of play, he was unwilling to fuel talk that they could launch a genuine title challenge.

The French goalkeeper said, via the Guardian: “Following last season, I think we are still learning, we are a young team, we have a lot of talent. It is our basics, to be strong at the back. It does not mean we are a defensive team. We try a lot and we take a lot of risks and we try to play as high as possible on the pitch.

“We try to put pressure on teams, especially in the first half – this is our football style. We try to have options, to sometimes play deeper and to counter attack. Football is always about spirit, about the team performance and this was perfect. As long as we keep the same mentality and spirit – we have ambition.

“Of course it is easier to speak after a good performance and a good win but it is too early to speak about this season. There are still a lot of games to play and we are just focusing on the start which has been very good and after the international break we need to keep going, to keep working in the same way and we will see after half the season where we will be and what our ambitions are.”

Though Lloris is clearly trying to quash talk of a title charge, it already looks likely that Pochettino’s side will at least be in the mix at the business end of the season.

They have also got their Champions League campaign back on track with an impressive away victory over CSKA Moscow, and it looks as though an exciting season could be in store for Spurs and their supporters.
