Hugo Lloris has been quoted by Football London as saying he does not always lead the team-talks in the dressing room, given the presence of three others in Tottenham trio Eric Dier, Harry Kane and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.
Lloris, 35, remains Tottenham’s club captain after penning a new contract in January that will keep him at Spurs until the summer of 2024. It is likely that that will see him retain the armband until he is 37, when his deal ends.
The ex-Lyon star’s credentials are unwavering for the captaincy – given he has now surpassed 400 appearances for Tottenham, and won the World Cup with France as skipper. He has played 136 times for his country.
As per Football London, Lloris spoke about what happens in the Tottenham changing room ahead of Monday night’s clash against Everton – and he namdropped Kane, Dier and Hojbjerg as fellow Spurs leaders.
“It depends,” Lloris said, when asked if he gives a pre-match speech. “It’s not only my responsibility. There are also important players in the changing room, some leaders like Harry, Pierre, Eric who are quite vocal.”
Lloris on Kane, Dier, Hojbjerg: Tottenham really need their leaders
On a weekend where Wolves, Manchester United and West Ham all suffered defeats, Tottenham have got to take advantage and close the gap on in-form Arsenal. In seventh, they have three games in hand on the two above.
A win against struggling Everton on Monday night significantly improves their top-four hopes. It sees them go level with West Ham on points, but with two in hand. It sees them go two behind United, with two in hand.
They will need their leaders like Lloris and the other three to keep the players focused, and not to lose patience if things do not initially go their way. But a win against Everton is crucial to keep top-four hopes alive.
