The Tottenham goalkeeper speaks about the club’s dismal Champions League campaign.
Speaking to the club’s official website, Hugo Lloris has admitted that he questioned whether Tottenham Hotspur’s dismal Champions League campaign would affect their momentum in the Premier League.
Spurs were group-stage casualties in Europe’s elite competition last year in what was their first spell in the tournament since 2011.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side – who played their home games in Wembley – beat CSKA Moscow home and away, but lost twice to Monaco and once to Bayer Leverkusen.
Nevertheless, Tottenham put that disappointment behind them and seriously challenged Chelsea for the Premier League title, ultimately finishing second, and Lloris admits that he did wonder if their poor European campaign would have a knock-on effect for their domestic aspirations.
“The only disappointment was the Champions League. That was a strange campaign. It wasn’t Tottenham, it wasn’t our identity and we can have some regrets,” he told Tottenham’s website.
“I did question how we might deal with that back in the Premier League because we fought all last season to get into the Champions League and as soon as you are there, you fail – and not just the results but the way we played.
“The reaction of the team was fantastic, though, and step by step, we became stronger and stronger. That means we learned from our mistakes and that’s positive.”
The experience will surely stand the Lilywhites in good stead as they aim for a far more respectable stint in the Champions League next season.
