Wonderkid striker Hugo Ekitike signed for PSG almost five months ago after snubbing a move to Newcastle United, yet it has only taken the attacker up until now to score his first goal for his new club.
The 20-year-old forward came on for Neymar against Auxerre with the reigning Ligue 1 champions 3-0 up against the newly-promoted side. And within nine minutes, Ekitike had found the back of the net to make it 5-0 to PSG, with the youngster’s goal sending the Parc des Princes into raptures, as seen in the video below.
The result was the perfect send off for PSG ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup break as the Parisian side head into 2023 top of the league by four points. Yet for Ekitike, it might come as a shock for the youngster that it took this long to score his first goal for his new club, especially after snubbing Newcastle in the summer to join the French giants.
The Magpies were heavily linked with the France youth international as Newcastle did battle with PSG for Ekitike’s signature. However, it was the European titans who eventually won out as Christophe Galtier’s side signed the youngster on loan with an obligation to buy worth £30m as reported by Eurosport.
With Kylian Mbappe, Neymar and Lionel Messi on PSG’s books, it’s hardly no shock why supporters are in no rush to jump on Ekitike’s back over his lack of goals, and it’s a good reason why fans were delighted when the youngster found the back of the net against Auxerre this weekend.
Ekitike can enjoy hot streak in 2023 after bagging first PSG goal
Whilst Newcastle might have been a better destination for Ekitike, there’s no denying that the Magpies might not have been this patient with the French wonderkid had he not scored in five months whilst largely staying fit. And for PSG, their stance on the youngster will likely pay off in a big way.
Indeed, this one goal could be what ignites Ekitike’s PSG career. And with concerns already arising over what will happen to players who will travel out to Qatar, the youngster might be handed more minutes in January with Messi, Mbappe and Neymar all set to star in the Middle East this winter.
