Marco Asensio was once deemed untouchable, untouchable to the point that when Real Madrid handed him a new contract back in 2017 – they inserted a £458 million release clause into the contract to fend off interested parties.
Well, six years on from signing that contract, and Asensio, it has been announced, has finally completed his protracted move to PSG. The Spanish winger has signed a three-year contract with the French giants, keeping him at the club until 2026.
Asensio made his breakthrough into the Real Madrid first team, and made his mark with a wonderful long-range goal against UEFA Europa League specialists, Sevilla in the UEFA Super Cup. He scored 61 goals during his time at the Blaugrana including a goal in the UEFA Champions League final win against Juventus in 2017.
It turned out to be the right place, but the wrong time for the unfortunate Asensio.
When the Spanish winger broke through into the Real Madrid first team, he had the small matter of trying to usurp Gareth Bale on the right wing or one of Toni Kroos and Luka Modric in the middle of the park, or Cristiano Ronaldo on the left – it’s fair to say it was a difficult task.

Once Ronaldo and Bale left, in came Rodrygo and Vinicius Junior, two supreme talents with immense potential, Asensio once again missed out. The now 27-year-old has missed his chance and truth be told, hasn’t kicked on to reach his true potential.
There have been links to Arsenal in the past. Back in March, The Sun claimed that the Spaniard was in talks with Mikel Arteta and Arsenal, but nothing came of it. Instead, Paris was the player’s preference.
PSG, who have recently lost Lionel Messi to Inter Miami and potentially could lose Kylian Mbappe to Real Madrid this summer, represents a chance for the Spaniard. If he can hit the ground running in Ligue 1, he could nail down that right-wing position and be an essential part of a new look PSG under former Spanish national team coach, Luis Enrique.
It seems the former Barcelona manager is a big fan of the 27-year-old. In a recent interview, Enrique said: “Marco Asensio is a top player, he has huge quality.” This will be music to the ears of Asensio.
