Roy Keane told Super Sunday on Sky Sports that Serge Aurier is a ‘car crash’ footballer for Tottenham.

The outspoken TV pundit thinks Aurier has been a ‘huge problem’ for Tottenham because of his inability to ‘sense danger’ when defending.

That was evident on Sunday when his lack of awareness allowed Edinson Cavani to score his now-disallowed goal before the same player was allowed free space on Aurier’s side to feed Fred for Manchester United’s equalising goal.

But Keane likes what Aurier brings going forward, but he’s not a fan of what he does when going back.

“Big problem for him,” said Keane. “If you want to go anywhere as a football club, a good team, or you want to have a settled back four.

“He’s got a rick in him. He has caused loads of problems. I have described him as a bit of a car crash.

“Nice powerful boy, keeps going forward, but defensively I think he doesn’t smell danger or see the danger. And that’s been a huge problem for Spurs, the right-back position.”

Right-back has been one of the biggest issues for Tottenham for a number of seasons now and their £23 million player has been at the heart of it (BBC Sport).

Whether it’s rashness in his defending, poor positioning, or giving away penalties, Aurier’s form hasn’t improved even with the more defensive-minded Jose Mourinho in the dugout.

Matt Doherty’s signing last summer hasn’t helped the situation because he has also struggled and it’s a problem area that needs to be looked at once again when the transfer window re-opens.
