Reports in Portugal are claiming that Everton have made a £40m bid for Benfica’s Mexican international striker Raul Jimenez.
It’s difficult to know where to start with reports in Portuguese publication Record that Everton have made a club-record £40 million bid for Raul Jimenez.
For one, the price-tag is nothing short of ridiculous. Clearly, The Toffees have money to spend like never before with majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri bankrolling a summer spending spree verging on a total of £100 million so far.
Yet, that does not mean the club should lose all sense of value. Jimenez might have helped Benfica win the Primera Liga title in each of his two seasons in Lisbon but a tally of twelve goals in 47 games hardly screams ‘world class’, even if injuries do skew the statistics somewhat.

Furthermore, in Jimenez’s previous spell in a top European league, he hardly set the world alight. In 24 La Liga games for Atletico Madrid, the Mexican hit the back of the net just once. After just a single season at the Vicente Calderon, he was farmed out to Benfica.
Therefore, it’s clear that Everton, who need attacking reinforcements with talisman Romelu Lukaku tipped to leave, should be wary.
And Benfica, who are renowned for being very stubborn negotiators, will demand a huge fee after receiving a bid in excess of £40 million for Jimenez from a club in the Chinese Super League in January.
However, Everton can sign a lot better for a lot less.
