Tottenham fans have taken to Twitter to react after Villarreal announced the signing of Serge Aurier on a one-year contract.

What’s the story?

Well, the 28-year-old came to a mutual agreement with Spurs on August 31st to terminate his contract in N17.

Aurier has been without a club ever since, but clearly maintained a decent level of fitness as he’s now earned a contract at Villarreal.

With all due respect to Spurs, it’s arguably a step up right now, as Villarreal are competing in the Champions League this season.

In truth, it’s a very, very good move for the 70-cap Ivory Coast international.

Aurier will link up with former Tottenham players Etienne Capoue and Juan Foyth, where he’ll also play under ex-Arsenal manager Unai Emery.

Villarreal have the option to extend his deal by another two years, if he impresses for the remainder of the current campaign.

Did Tottenham make a mistake with Serge Aurier?

One fan below seems to think Tottenham made a mistake in releasing Aurier, instead of selling him for a fee.

In terms of the squad, it wasn’t a mistake as Emerson Royal arrived to replace the former Paris Saint-Germain right-back.

On the other hand, if you were to look at it from a financial point of view, Fabio Paratici surely could’ve made some money from Aurier.

After all, despite his flaws, we’re talking about a player with 70 international caps, 26 Champions League appearances and 13 trophies.

Aurier is a player of pedigree despite his frequent lapses of concentration.

To compare, Chelsea managed to land £20m for Marc Guéhi over the summer, a player who’d never kicked a ball in the Premier League.

In that respect, Spurs surely could’ve found someone to pay at least £5m for Aurier.

Nevertheless, let’s see what the Tottenham fans on Twitter have been saying about Villarreal’s announcement…
