Arsenal fans are reacting on Twitter to speculation about Matteo Guendouzi from France today.
It was reported by La Provence this morning that the 22-year-old midfielder would be a Marseille player by early next week.
Guendouzi seems to have no future at Arsenal under Mikel Arteta following a series of behind-the-scenes collisions with the Spanish coach.
The report from France added that the Gunners are looking for £17 million.
After his first season in North London, the former Lorient midfielder, who joined Arsenal in the summer of 2018, could’ve easily been worth treble that amount, which illustrates how far his stock has fallen since Arteta took over from Unai Emery in December of 2019.
Here’s how some fans of the Emirates Stadium club reacted on Twitter to the idea that he’ll be gone within days.
Cautionary tale
With Lucas Torreira also set to leave Arsenal, there’s a few cautionary tales there.
Both midfielders had brilliant first seasons in North London under Emery and it isn’t a stretch to believe that fans would’ve expected a minimum of £100 million from both, had they gone in the summer of 2019.
The fact that Arsenal will be lucky to get one-third of that figure now, two years later, sums up just how quickly your fortunes can change in football.
Guendouzi and Torreira both spent last season on loan at Hertha Berlin and Atletico Madrid respectively.
And that was a big indication that Arteta has no long-term plan for either at London Colney, which was unthinkable only a couple of years ago.
