Tom Huddlestone has told Stadium Astro that he would be ‘surprised’ if Tottenham parted ways with the out-of-favour Dele Alli despite the player still being loved by the fans.

The 24-year-old has found game time hard to come by since the start of the season and the recent transfer window was fuelled with speculation that he was going to leave.

The Guardian did report that Spurs rejected a loan approach from Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain for their attack-minded midfielder.

Former Spurs man, Huddlestone shared his thoughts on Alli’s current situation under Jose Mourinho because it currently looks bleak.

“With Dele, I still think he has the love of the fans,” Huddlestone told Stadium Astro. “It just comes across that he and Jose don’t see eye to eye. I think Tottenham [against West Ham] was more of two sitters with Ndombele as a number 10.

“But in recent weeks, it has been one sitter with the two number eights, so in that system, Dele probably hasn’t played that system for Tottenham before. It’s an awkward one. If the manager doesn’t fancy him and he isn’t playing the system, which would benefit him, then it’s a difficult one to get him in. But everyone knows his class and qualities.

“But these little murmurings of Tottenham considering getting rid of him, at a young age and as a British player, is quite surprising. It might just be the spark he needs to get his career back on track.

“He might have to move on. But it would be a surprise if Tottenham were to cash in on such a young-ish player coming into his prime years. That would be quite surprising. I am pretty sure whatever club, whether it is Tottenham or if he was to move on, he would be able to hit the ground running.”

Alli has to look across the dressing room and towards a certain Tanguy Ndombele, whose career was seemingly stalling before it started at Spurs back in February.

Mourinho called Tottenham’s record signing out at that time but he has since responded in emphatic fashion and has been one of their best performers in recent weeks.

Whilst Alli is a completely different player to Ndombele, he needs to remember that Mourinho did get his goalscoring touch out of him when he first arrived, but it disappeared once again.
