Monaco could let Terence Kongolo leave after a difficult start in Ligue 1 – Huddersfield Town are keen while 2016 suitors West Brom need reinforcements.
The defence had always been The Netherland’s Achilles heel but with Stefan De Vrij and Terence Kongolo emerging through the ranks, it seemed as if the nation of Total Football would finally have a few players capable of stopping goals as opposed to scoring them.
But while De Vrij has gone from strength to strength at Lazio, Kongolo’s career has stuttered. So much so that he has been linked with a stunning move to Huddersfield Town just half a season after signing for Ligue 1 champions Monaco from Feyenoord for £11.4 million, as reported by the BBC.
The 23-year-old is equally at home either at centre-half or left-back but that versatility hasn’t helped him in France, where he has started just three league games.
And according to France Football, Kongolo could leave the Principality on loan in January with Huddersfield keen to give him a chance in the Premier League. This has the potential to be the latest eye-catching addition at the John Smith’s Stadium with the likes of Pascal Gross and Laurent Depoitre already proving to be tremendous value.
Whether Huddersfield are the only Premier League interested, however, seems doubtful. The Birmingham Mail stated that West Brom were eyeing the 2017 Eredivisie champion a year-and-a-half ago.
And with Jonny Evans seemingly set to leave The Hawthorns in January in a £30 million deal, per The Mirror, there will soon be a gaping hole in The Baggies backline.
Kongolo, a classy and adaptable defender, could be a short-term solution on loan. But with £30 million in the back pocket, West Brom could perhaps tempt Monaco into a permanent move too.
