Huddersfield Town are set to reward captain Tommy Smith with a new long-term deal, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club.

Smith was instrumental in Huddersfield’s successful promotion to the Premier League last season with a number of eye-catching displays from right-back and he was named in the EFL Championship Team of the Year.

The attacking full-back was a virtual ever-present for Huddersfield in their memorable season last term and he is expected to be fit for the new season despite suffering a broken foot in the play-off final win over Reading.

Smith’s displays have not gone unnoticed among rival sides with a number of clubs having shown an interest in the defender, including the likes of Leicester, Middlesbrough and Derby County

However, Huddersfield boss David Wagner is keen to keep hold of Smith and secure his long-term future as he wants him to lead the team into the Premier League next season.

Talks are at an advanced stage between all parties and Smith is expected to sign a new three-year deal at the Yorkshire club.

Smith came through the ranks at Manchester City before joining Huddersfield in the summer of 2012 and he has gone on to make over 150 appearances for the Terriers.
