Aston Villa, Derby and Norwich are all said to be interested in Michael Hefele but they can’t offer him what Huddersfield can.

Huddersfield Town are currently having to ward off interest for one of their key players following promotion to the Premier League, but surprisingly it is coming from the Championship.

As the Daily Mail reports, the Terriers are set to offer defender Michael Hefele a new contract amid speculation linking him with Aston Villa, Derby County and Norwich City.

Hefele joined newly appointed manager, David Wagner, at the John Smith’s Stadium from Germany last summer when the centre-back was signed from Dynamo Dresden.

After making 42 appearances in all competitions and playing a key role in their successful charge to the top flight via the playoffs – even chipping in with five goals – the 26-year-old quickly became a firm favourite among the fans.

It is Hefele’s leadership qualities that really stood out, however, and it was these that promotion hopefuls Villa, Derby and Norwich were hoping to utilise to aid their own ambitions in 2017/18.

Yet despite the fact that trio of clubs have more illustrious recent history in the Premier League, it is Huddersfield that are there now and it would seem like madness for the German to give that up to try and battle his way out of the second tier for a successive season.

New deal or not, Hefele still has two years remaining on his current contract and if the choice is between being given the opportunity to extend that, or drop back down to the Championship, surely there is only one option?
