Liverpool supporters have reacted on Twitter to Manchester City defender Ruben Dias being names the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year, as posted by Sky Sports.
This time last season, Jordan Henderson was claiming the award after he helped Liverpool end their long-awaited drought to win the English title again.
And with Man City reclaiming their crown once more, those eagle-eyed critics in the media think that it’s Dias who is deserving of the gong for the 2020/21 campaign.
But sections of the Liverpool support believe that Harry Kane should have been the one collecting the award after his outstanding season in North London.
The Premier League’s top goalscorer and top assist-maker, Kane is both showcasing his sharp-shooting skills, as well as his quick-thinking intelligence when dropping deep.
Come the weekend, he may well remain top of both charts, especially if he can outscore his rival, Mo Salah, for the Golden Boot on Sunday.
Given that Spurs could finish out of Europe altogether, it has been a pretty remarkable campaign from their boyhood fan up top.
There’s no doubt that Dias has added a nasty side to Man City’s backline, calmness and making those around him, such as John Stones, much better.
But Kane should feel hard done by if he ends the season without an individual trophy because he’s not winning one with the Spurs team anytime soon.
Either way, Man City’s £65 million man (Sky Sports) is still deserving of this recognition and it will be interesting to see who now walks away with the main gong – the PFA award.
