Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe is ‘so pleased’ for Dan Burn for scoring his first goal for the Toon against Leicester City. The defender broke the deadlock in a 2-0 quarter-final tie.
Burn put the Magpies in front on the hour mark at St James’ Park on Tuesday night after a tricky run into the box. Joelinton then turned from creator to goalscorer to stretch the lead with a calm finish on 72 minutes. The Brazilian fired home from Miguel Almiron’s delivery.
Beating Leicester secured Newcastle a place in the semi-final draw for the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night. It is the first time that the Toon have made the final four since 1975/76. The Magpies lost in the final that term in their only appearance in the EFL Cup showpiece.

Newcastle spurned a host of chances to break the deadlock against Leicester before Burn put Howe’s side ahead. The 6 ft 6 defender latched onto Joelinton’s pass, jinked between two Foxes defenders and slotted the ball home in the bottom corner of Danny Ward’s net.
Howe had given Burn the 30-year-old’s 37th Newcastle appearance against Leicester in the Carabao Cup. Over his previous games in the black-and-white shirt, the Blyth-born star had only offered an assist and never scored. Of his games, 34 have been in the Premier League.

Howe thrilled for Newcastle star Burn after his Carabao Cup goal vs Leicester
Burn is a boyhood Newcastle fan who Howe signed from Brighton & Hove Albion for £13m in January 2022. The Magpies made the Seagulls three offers to secure his services during the club’s first transfer window with backing from Saudi Arabia after the £305m takeover.
Newcastle had chances to sign Burn in his youth but opted against acquiring their Carabao Cup hero against Leicester. The Sussex Express notes the defender once had trials with the Toon as a kid. He also later elected to join Fulham over Newcastle from Darlington in 2011.
So, Howe was thrilled for lifelong Magpies supporter Burn to score his first Newcastle goal against Leicester. The Carabao Cup hero only scored twice through 85 games for Brighton.
“Incredible moment for Dan Burn,” Howe told BBC Radio 5 Live. “I am so pleased for him. This is his club, and he has come back here and he is savouring every moment.”
