A Joelinton injury put a major downer on Newcastle United’s end-of-season victory at Burnley on Sunday evening.

The Magpies rounded off a brilliant second half of the campaign with a 2-1 win away to the Clarets, who were subsequently relegated from the Premier League.

Joelinton required treatment only 10 minutes into the game after urging Newcastle’s medical staff on to the field.

The Brazilian attacker, reborn since Eddie Howe replaced Steve Bruce at St James’s Park, then had to be stretchered off at Turf Moor.

And although Howe hasn’t seen the severity of the injury itself, the Magpies manager has revealed that the problem was so severe that Joelinton’s bone was exposed.

He told BBC Sport after the game: “I haven’t seen it but I’ve been told he has a deep cut – you could see the bone. He’s in good spirits in the changing room though and seems OK.”

There’s two pieces of good news for Newcastle fans here.

Firstly, the season is over and therefore Joelinton won’t be missing any Premier League games as a result of this issue.

And secondly, it’s only a very deep cut, rather than the bone protruding through the skin after a severe fracture of some description.

As mentioned, the big South American has been immense under Howe, with even Jamie Carragher admitting that he’s been a ‘revelation’ last week.

The Joelinton injury isn’t a positive way in which to end the campaign, but Howe’s comments that the player seems in good spirits despite the gash is certainly one reason to be cheerful.
