Eddie Howe has told Alan Shearer on The Athletic that as a manager, you are always “living in fear” when the Newcastle boss was asked for his take on Thomas Tuchel and Scott Parker‘s Chelsea and Bournemouth exits.
Chelsea confirmed the exit of Tuchel on Wednesday morning after three defeats in his side’s first seven games. His exit comes off the back of a loss to Dinamo Zagreb away from home – albeit, reports claim a decision was already made.
But there are also suggestions that Tuchel and Todd Boehly’s relationship was strained, due to issues regarding transfers. Similarly at Bournemouth, Parker was given his marching orders as he requested more in terms of spending.
Newcastle legend Shearer interviewed Toon boss Howe for The Athletic, and asked him about the exits of Tuchel and Parker. He says, as a manager, you are always “living in fear” – but that can motivate you to always do your best.

“That’s the problem when you’re a manager, you’re always living in fear,” Howe said. “Well, I am. I’ve got no problem saying that. You’ve got that fear of tomorrow. If you don’t prepare right, you don’t get training right.
“You don’t get your game plan right, it falls away. There are not many professions like it. If you’re a musician and write a hit single then that’s you for the next 50-60 years. You can’t live off one game. You’re judged game to game.”
Tuchel exits Chelsea: Howe always ‘living in fear’ as a manager
It is a ruthless industry. The managers take the brunt of it. A lack of investment from owners, players underperforming, but it is always the manager that gets the sack. But when it is good, it is excellent. You are the main man.
Howe is that man at Newcastle right now. Tuchel was the man at Chelsea. Parker was that man when gaining promotion. But things change quickly in football. Tuchel and Parker have left before the first international break.
There is no danger of Howe leaving Newcastle. But if the Toon lose six games on the bounce, for example, he will be under enormous pressure. With the current scheduling, a matter of weeks. Howe’s description is fair.
