Former Premier League and World Cup final referee Howard Webb has made his feelings clear on BT Sport this afternoon regarding a tackle by Everton right-back Seamus Coleman this afternoon against Manchester City.

The Ireland international, who scored his first goal for his club as captain during the week, slid in hard on Manchester City attacker Raheem Sterling. He received a yellow card for the challenge bu on second viewing it was clear that calls for a red card may have had credence.

Speaking on the BT Sport Score show former Premier League match official Webb made his feelings clear – that the tackle was worthy of a red card:

“It’s a red card when you see it on TV.

“It’s above the boot, on the ankle, all the studs onto the ankle which is open and exposed.

“It’s a real, real poor tackle. Too much force, the position of the contact is awful.

“He turns his body into the tackle.”

He was not alone. The Score panel of Chris Sutton, Robbie Savage, Harry Kewell and Jermaine Jenas seemed to agree – with Jenas exclaiming it was an ‘ankle breaker’ of a challenge from the Everton defender.

There is no doubt that Coleman was very fortunate not to find himself sent off after the tackle on Sterling.

Everton ended up drawing the game 1-1, with goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg saving two City penalties.

If the Toffees had been down to ten men it may have been an entirely different story.
