The Manchester United defender avoided a red for a two-footed lunge on Idrissa Gueye.

Speaking to the Times, former Premier League referee Howard Webb has claimed Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo should have been sent off against Everton.

Everton hosted United at Goodison Park on Sunday in what proved to be an ill-tempered meeting between the two sides.

The game’s most controversial moment came midway through the first half when Argentine Rojo lunged into a two-footed challenge on Blues midfielder Idrissa Gueye.

He escaped with just a yellow card despite the fact he had lunged with both feet off the ground and missed the ball.

There were few disputing it should have been a straight red and Webb has backed that suggestion.

“[Marcos] Rojo’s tackle on [Idrissa] Gueye was a clear red card,” he told the Times.

“As soon as a player leaves the ground and jumps in with two feet, studs first, straight legs, it’s a red-card offence.”

“It is serious foul play because he will be using excessive force and endangering the safety of the opponent.”

Luckily for United Rojo will not face any more punishment given that he was awarded a yellow card for the challenge.

That will only enrage Everton even further, who will feel aggrieved that this major decision went against them.

They would have been confident of sealing all three points against ten men but instead had to settle for a share of the points.

Indeed it was a result that suited neither side, especially United, who now find themselves 13 points behind league leaders Chelsea.
