Yoane Wissa’s rise to represent the DR Congo is all the more extraordinary after he almost lost his eyesight in 2021.
DR Congo are playing in the World Cup for the first time in 52 years and face a difficult test against Portugal for their opening game of Group K.
Wissa is one of the African nation’s most high-profile players and the fact he is able to play for his country is a milestone in itself.

Yoane Wissa survived an acid attack in 2021
While playing for Lorient in France in 2021, a month before he joined Brentford, the forward was attacked at his home.
Acid was thrown in his face and left him fearing that he could lose his eyesight forever.
Fortunately, he was able to recover and has since gone on to become a leading talisman in the Premier League.
Former teammate Pierre-Yves Hamel was never shocked by his surprise, telling BBC Sport in 2025: “After the attack, he never complained.
“He immediately wanted to move forward and to blossom today is a just reward for his efforts.
“Once Yoane has an idea in mind, he will do his utmost to make it happen – no matter how long it takes.”

Yoane Wissa sends warning to Cristiano Ronaldo
DR Congo are the underdogs for their group stage opener against Portugal, but still have belief they can win.
Going up against Ronaldo and co, Wissa said they don’t fear the 41-year-old and will do their best to win.
He said: “He scored (a penalty) against us, so yeah, it’s going to be the third time I play against him. He’s one of the idols for every player, but tomorrow we’re going to look him in the eyes and hopefully we are going to win against him.”
