However, it remains uncertain whether he will still be a Southampton player at the start of February, with Manchester City interested in signing the Dutchman, while Liverpool, who have a strong interest in him, and Arsenal are also monitoring the situation, as reported by The Times.
Losing Van Dijk midway through the season would undoubtedly represent a major blow for Southampton, who would surely need to bring in a new centre-back to cope with his departure.
Jack Stephens is talented, while manager Mauricio Pellegrino can also call upon Maya Yoshida and Wesley Hoedt, but a new centre-back would surely be required to replace Van Dijk.
While clearly not of the same quality as Van Dijk, Yohan Benalouane, who is likely to be available having barely featured for Leicester City this season, would be a useful stopgap signing before Southampton could assess the situation properly in the summer.
