Wolves are favourites to sign Mario Balotelli from Liverpool, but Walter Zenga is not a fan.
Mario Balotelli
One of the most unlikely rumours of the summer took a life of it’s own this week when Wolves were linked to Mario Balotelli.
The Daily Express reported the Championship side, backed by new investors, were looking to sign the Italian striker on loan.
SkyBet have since made them favourites to sign the unpredictable striker, offering odds as short as Evens.
But Wolves fans lapping up the unlikely claims might want to avoid getting carried away.
Reality check
Wolves boss Walter Zenga has been linked with signing Mario Balotelli once before, and made clear he was not a fan.
New Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Walter Zenga
This was 12 months ago while he was boss at Serie A side Sampdoria, and was quick to dismiss the rumours.
He was quoted by Football Italia last July stating: “I joked that we could offer Balotelli some boots, a jersey and the joy of stepping on to the field at Marassi hearing the Sampdoria fans sing.
“We need different types of people here. There are some players who would struggle in certain teams. In any case, Balotelli won’t come here, so it’s not an issue that needs to be discussed.”
Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport reported last night that a deal to take Balotelli to Wolves is a no-goer.
The report states Zenga is not interested, and says Balotelli’s most likely options are either Chievo or Ajax.
