Newcastle United are riding high at the top of the Championship – and here’s something else to make them smile.
If you are a Newcastle United fan, things couldn’t really be going much better right now. Top of the Championship with a Champions League winning manager calling the shots, while rivals Sunderland sit rock bottom of the Premier League.

Many teams have won trophies, but there can only be one record goalscorer. Alan Shearer’s 260 Premier League goals is yet to be eclipsed by anyone, and the former Newcastle number nine is also the record goalscorer for his boyhood club, breaking the record set by Jackie Milburn. Shearer scored his 201st Newcastle goal against Portsmouth back in 2006.
The Magpies’ recent record against rivals Sunderland has been shocking, but many fans still take joy from their 5-1 victory over the Black Cats in 2010, with a Kevin Nolan hat-trick making it a frightening Halloween for those in red and white.

Newcastle have been used as a stepping stone by a lot of players, with many leaving St James’ Park for a bigger club, and it is a great source of joy when those moves don’t work out. Jose Enrique headed to Liverpool to compete at a higher level, and was embarrassed on his return to St James’ Park when he ended the game in goal.
