Marcus Rashford’s recent performance in the domestic cup saw Barcelona advance to the next round, proving Thomas Tuchel and Ruben Amorim wrong in the process.

Barcelona took on third-division side Guadalajara in the Copa del Rey’s Round of 32. Despite being a straightforward fixture on paper, it was still one they had to take seriously.

Ultimately, it took Hansi Flick’s side over 75 minutes to get the opening goal, with Marcus Rashford’s second-half goal finally confirming the result.

This game gave the British forward a chance to show what he can do away from his usual role, and he made sure not to waste it.

Rashford started off well at Barcelona, but has since seen his role reduced, now that Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski are back from injury.

That has made matches like this even more important for him. With Hansi Flick rotating the side, the former Manchester United star needed to show he deserves more time on the pitch.

He has become more of a team player lately, something the German manager has noticed, and he backed that up with his performance in the 2-0 win over Guadalajara.

Rashford started up front, finishing with a goal, three chances created and four shots. He could have easily added to his tally.

His constant movement and blistering pace established him as a persistent threat to the opposition’s defence. In doing so, he effectively contradicted Tuchel’s earlier-season assessment that Rashford was not a striker.

The level of opposition was not exactly high – it was just the kind of disciplined low block that the Briton has had trouble breaking down in the past.

Even so, he found a way through. It was another sign that if he stays focused, there is no reason he cannot play anywhere on the pitch.

Spanish media react to Marcus Rashford’s goal-scoring performance

Barcelona have made the most of Rashford’s presence on social media, knowing that the Man Utd connection adds real value to his profile.

The Spanish press has given him regular attention too, and that continued after his latest goal.

Mundo Deportivo called him ‘persistent’, highlighting how he kept pushing forward even after missing two clear chances before eventually getting his reward.

Marca focused on what they described as Rashford’s ‘redemption’, mentioning the missed opportunities but recognising how he ended up making the key contribution.

ESPN Deportes noted Lamine Yamal’s impressive assist to Rashy, pointing out how the pair have built up a solid goals and assists tally this season.

AS also highlighted the Briton’s finish from a tight angle with his weaker foot.

10TV praised his late breakaway goal that wrapped up an unexpectedly tough match for Barcelona against lower-league opposition.

Despite the performance, Rashford is expected to return to the bench for Barcelona’s next league game against third-placed Villarreal.

But with recent form on his side, he will be hoping to make an impact again if given the chance off the bench.
