Serena Williams has opened up about how motherhood has reshaped her perspective, revealing that her eldest daughter is now playing an unexpected role in helping her become a better parent.

The former tennis champion has spoken candidly about life after retirement, where lessons now come less from the court and more from daily family moments.

As she balances raising two young daughters, Williams has admitted that her instincts as a younger sibling are being challenged in ways she never anticipated.

Serena Williams reflects on learning from Olympia

Speaking during a recent conversation captured in a video interview shared on TODAY with Jenna & Shienelle, Williams described how her daughters’ personalities have shaped her approach to parenting.

“The older one is so sweet. Olympia is so sweet. She’s the best big sister. The little one, Adira, she’s feisty, but she’s nice. I mean, I’m obsessed.

“I’m the youngest in my family, so I always have to make sure I’m not being too nice,” Williams said.

Williams explained that being the youngest sibling herself has influenced how she reacts to her children, particularly when it comes to boundaries and discipline.

Watching Olympia take on responsibility as an older sister has forced Williams to reassess how she supports both daughters without overcorrecting.

Williams also acknowledged that her natural reactions do not always align with what her children teach her in the moment.

“Sometimes I’m like, ‘Let her have it. Let her do it.’ And Olympia will say, ‘No!’ And I’m like, ‘No, let her do it!’ Yes. I feel like I’ve got to shake out of that. It’s a whole new ballgame,” the ex-tennis star admitted.

The exchange highlights how Olympia has become a quiet authority within the family, often stepping in with a sense of structure that surprises her mother.

Rather than resisting those moments, she has embraced them as part of a broader evolution away from elite competition and toward a different kind of growth.

For Williams, the lessons now come not from match play or training sessions, but from listening closely to the voices inside her own home.
