Rotherham have sacked the former Leeds boss – here’s what a look at the stats tells you…
News of Rotherham United’s sacking of Neil Redfearn has surprised many. The Millers have struggled all season and sit in the relegation zone yet are just two points off safety.
So were the club justified in axing the ex-Leeds United boss after 21 games (20 in the league)?
Here’s his Championship record at the club…
| Redfearn | Won | Drawn | Lost | Points per Game | Games |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rotherham | 5 | 2 | 13 | 0.85 | 20 |
Interestingly, if you look at the man who succeeded him at Leeds, Uwe Rosler, he was ultimately sacked for less – achieving more points per game than Redfearn and losing far less. He also won far less…
| Rosler | Won | Drawn | Lost | Points per Game | Games |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Leeds | 2 | 5 | 4 | 1 | 11 |
A look at former boss Steve Evans, however, and how he’s doing at Leeds currently is less clear. Again, the Scot has lost far less than Redfearn did at Rotherham and his average points per game is far healthier. But he has only won one more game than ‘Redders’ in the same amount of time in the Championship – drawing several.
| Evans | Won | Drawn | Lost | Points per Game | Games |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Leeds | 6 | 7 | 6 | 1.32 | 19 |
Looking at Evans at Rotherham, meanwhile, his short spell with the Millers at the start of the season didn’t yield all that much, though he still averaged more points per game than Redfearn.
| Evans | Won | Drawn | Lost | Points per Game | Games |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rotherham | 2 | 2 | 5 | 0.89 | 9 |
The stats, then, suggest Rotherham have a basis to have dismissed their manager, even if he feels as though he should have been given more time. At Leeds, a similar record would have received even less of it…
