How Nicklas Bendtner could prevent Marko Marin’s Bundesliga return

Chelsea midfielder Marko Marin may be prevented from returning to the Bundesliga next season.

German tabloid Bild has suggested that Chelsea midfielder Marko Marin could be the subject of interest from Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt.

Marin spent last season on loan at Sevilla in Spain and while confirming that he’ll return to Chelsea for pre-season, his options at Stamford Bridge look bleak and could force him to look to his native Germany for a permanent move.

“There are some options, even from the Bundesliga – I’m starting there in July (Chelsea). Let’s see what happens next,” he’s quoted by Bild.

Marin’s close family live in Frankfurt so it’s a natural option for him although Bild questions the value of any move for Marin based on two factors.

Firstly, the paper suggests that Alex Meier’s experience and form means there is no immediate need for Frankfurt to go after the 25-year-old with other areas of the squad needing to be improved.

“Where the attacking midfielder shines, plays Eintracht scorer Alex Meier. It’s questionable whether the club wants to line up Marin. Especially as the distress in attack is greater. Arsenal’s Nicklas Bendtner is an option, but expensive,” reports the newspaper.

Marin’s options at Chelsea are limited. Cesc Fabregas’ arrival and the abundance of central midfielders at Jose Mourinho’s arrival suggests he won’t get a chance to replace the void left by Frank Lampard’s departure.

There are plenty of players who will be ahead of him in the pecking order next season; Fabregas, Ramires, Oscar and even someone like Lucas Piazon arguably deserves a chance ahead of the German.

He showed at Sevilla last season that he can be a perfectly competent and consistent midfielder but if that’s not Frankfurt’s immediate concern, they’re unlikely to go about doing a deal for him quickly.

He made 29 appearances in La Liga and Europa League football last season, which he’ll struggle to replicate in Chelsea colours once the new campaign gets under way.
