How much did the Glazers buy Manchester United for? Many have asked this after Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al-Thani made a bid.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has also made an offer to buy the Red Devils from the Glazer family, as the race to secure ownership of Manchester United intensifies.

According to the Guardian, Sheikh Jassim’s bid is worth at least £4bn.

So, how much did the Glazers buy Manchester United for? And how much profit could they make? Let’s take a look…

How much did the Glazers buy Manchester United for?

Well, the Glazer family are in line to make a remarkable profit.

According to ESPN, Malcolm Glazer bought Manchester United for just £790m – relatively speaking – back in 2005, which caused plenty of backlash from the Old Trafford faithful.

After sitting on their investment for 18 years – watching it crumble after Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013 – the Glazer family would receive a profit of £3.2bn if rumours of a £4bn bid from Sheikh Jassim are true.

That is a phenomenal amount of money, and it would be almost unbelievable if the Glazer family decided to reject such an enticing offer, especially seeing as they are far from popular at Old Trafford.

To put it into context, a £4bn sale would be £1.5bn more than the £2.5bn Todd Boehly spent to acquire Chelsea from Roman Abramovich in 2022.

How much is Manchester United selling for?

While a £3.2bn profit would surely be welcomed by the Glazer family, it may actually not be enough.

According to Sky Sports, the Glazers want £5bn to sell Manchester United.

Sheikh Jassim is a member of the Gulf state’s ruling Royal Family, who – according to The Sun – have a collective net worth of £275bn.

In that respect, he is certainly capable of increasing his bid by an extra £1bn – however, it remains to be seen if the Glazer family accept the alleged £4bn on the table before it comes to that.
