As PSG prepare to buy Barcelona’s Neymar for a reported £198 million, how does that compare with the money it cost to put together the current Tottenham first team?

Neymar vs Tottenham

Much of the football world has been left astounded by what BBC Sport report will be a £198 million fee PSG fork out to land Barcelona superstar Neymar. It practically doubles the previous record transfer, when Paul Pogba moved to Manchester United from Juventus.

But in order to understand just how much money that is, the figure can be used in comparison to the amount of money needed to put together the second best team in the country – Tottenham Hotspur. They may be shorn of fullback Kyle Walker, who arrived at Spurs for £4.5 million from Sheffield United according to ESPN, but the club remain the current Premier League runners up, having played arguably the best football in the division last season.

So how much of the Tottenham squad could you have bought with the money needed to raise Neymar from Barca’s clutches? Scroll below to find out

Cost of entire Tottenham first team squad:

Hugo Lloris – £7.8 million (BBC Sport)

Danny Rose – £1 million (Telegraph)

Toby Alderweireld – £11.5 million (Daily Mail)

Jan Vertonghen – £10 million (Mirror)

Harry Winks – Academy graduate

Ben Davies – Swap with Gylfi Sigurdsson, £10 million fee reported (Guardian)

Cameron Carter-Vickers – Academy graduate

Total: £203.8 million

So the entire Tottenham squad cost just £5.8 million more than PSG are paying for Neymar. Or to put it in other terms, if you take away Ben Davies, you could buy the entire group of players – all 21 of the remaining stars – with a few million to spare.

Not sure if that makes Spurs superb market dealers – many of their players are worth much more than it cost to bring them to the club, PSG carefree with their spending or Neymar outrageous in his talent. In reality, it is surely a combination of all three.
