Marcus Smart’s showing at practice caught the eye of both Austin Reaves and JJ Redick, who are counting on him to play a key role for the Lakers this season.
Bringing in the former Defensive Player of the Year was one of the standout decisions of LA’s offseason.
Luka Doncic played a big part in bringing Marcus Smart to LA. The Slovenian guard reached out directly, encouraging him to make the move.
JJ Redick has always been a fan of what Smart brings, especially his defensive skills and playoff experience, and will be happy to have him around this season.
But beyond just defence, there is another part of his game that teammates and coaches have taken notice of early on.
Austin Reaves reflects on Marcus Smart intensity during LA Lakers practice duel
Reaves spoke to the media following the LA Lakers’ most recent practice session. He reflected on how impressed he was after facing up against Smart.
The 27-year-old saw Smart’s intensity first-hand, noting how his defensive pressure could make a real impact for the Lakers this season.
Alongside that, Reaves also highlighted how Smart’s communication and leadership skills stood out to him during their time on the court together.
“He guarded me a little bit in the first practice. You still feel that pressure, that intensity that he brings on the defensive end. That’s going to be big for us. We need that.
“We need him to be the best version of himself with that communication that he brings, especially defensively.”
“He’s been in the league for a while; he knows how to win at the highest level. Very excited to have him.”
JJ Redick takes notice of Marcus Smart’s high energy

Marcus Smart’s intensity stood out to more than just Austin Reaves. JJ Redick also appreciated the way the former All-Defensive team guard maintained his energy throughout the session.
“He was awesome. Given the workload of today, I was impressed he was able to sustain his level of intensity as long as he did.”
Smart brings a defensive presence off the bench that the Lakers have been missing since Alex Caruso left in 2021. His ability to disrupt opponents could play a key role in tightening up LA’s second unit.
Beyond his defence, Smart adds valuable playoff experience, including a recent NBA Finals appearance. If he can get back to his best, LA may finally have a more balanced rotation than in recent years.

For now, it looks like the 31-year-old will start the season coming off the bench, as JJ Redick has already settled on his starting five. But if he continues to impress during training camp and pre-season games, a move into the starting line-up would not be surprising.
