Manchester City took down Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday night, with Erling Haaland also moving up the all-time Champions League goalscorers list in the process.

Phil Foden scored twice at the Etihad as City cruised to a 4-1 win. Rayan Cherki rounded off the scoring, while Haaland added to his already impressive European tally early on.

With 80 Champions League goals and counting, Haaland is chasing down Cristiano Ronaldo’s all-time record of 140. If he keeps scoring at this pace, it’s a mark that’s within reach before his career wraps up.

Erling Haaland closing in on Cristiano Ronaldo’s Champions League record

Haaland now has 54 Champions League goals to his name, moving him into the competition’s top ten scorers of all time.

He’s currently 10th on that list, just behind Bayern Munich’s Thomas Muller. Cristiano Ronaldo leads the way with 141 goals, with Lionel Messi second after scoring 129 before his move to MLS.

Now playing in the Saudi Pro League, it is unlikely we will see Ronaldo add any more to his tally.

Haaland is only 25 and still has time on his side. He needs another 87 goals to match Ronaldo’s record but appears to have a strong chance of doing so.

Haaland’s latest goal also drew comments from Jeremy Doku, who was keen to point out the striker’s overall impact beyond just the numbers.

“In terms of numbers Erling is unbelievable. Tonight he scored just one goal but he is so much more than goals and assists for us. He provides so much and is so important.”

City’s next challenge comes quickly, with a league match against Liverpool on Sunday, something Doku said the squad was already looking ahead to.

He said: “[Winning] that [against Liverpool] would make it a perfect week before the international break. Doku added: “We have to rest well, recover well and prepare well for them.”
