Following Liverpool’s 2-2 draw against Arsenal on Sunday, the Sky Sports pundit got people talking after claiming that Virgil van Dijk remains far better than the likes of Vidic despite his wobbly displays this season.
To reinforce his point, Carragher mentioned how Vidic performed against Torres during Liverpool and Manchester United’s battles over the years.

Well, the suggestion that Torres gave Vidic nightmares is nothing but a myth.
In 15 appearances against the Serbian, the Spaniard only scored three goals.
Of course, there were times when Torres made Vidic look amateurish, mainly when he left the Manchester United legend on his backside at Old Trafford before scoring in a 4-1 win for Liverpool back in 2008/09.
However, the towering centre-back often dealt with the Liverpool icon quite well in their 15 battles.
Vidic has even admitted that Didier Drogba caused him more issues, so it was strange to see Carragher mention Torres as the prime example.
Vidic once told FourFourTwo: “People say you had a difficult game against Torres but it was just the one game. I went to head the ball but changed my mind and tried to pass to Edwin (Van der Sar). I misjudged the distance and Torres scored. Drogba was tougher. Torres always created a chance to score, but Drogba was on you for the full game.”
For what it’s worth, we still think Van Dijk is better than Vidic ever was, mainly due to his speed and exquisite passing range which sets up numerous attack for Liverpool.
Nevertheless, the Manchester United colossus remains one of the best to ever play in the Premier League, and his legacy should not be smeared by his occasional mistakes up against Torres.
