Before the Summer, if there was one man that United fans wanted in their midfield, it was Wesley Sneijder. Scorer of five goals at the last World Cup, and instrumental in Inter Milan winning the treble, surely he is the perfect midfielder to replace Paul Scholes.
Up until one month ago it was just a pipedream, until chief executive David Gill met up with Inter counterparts. Now the fans have been given the most devastating feeling of all that a supporter can experience – hope.
United’s three signings, De Gea, Young, and Jones were wrapped up and signed within days. This is different, we are in a full-on Fabregas to Barcelona style transfer saga, with daily updates, speculation and denials. United fans will say simply, wake me up when its over.
But surely this would be worth it if it comes off?
Not only will United add a world class player to their midfield, but Inter will receive £30 million to put towards the capture of Manchester City’s Carlos Tevez, and have already indicated they are interested. The fear for United is that City convince Tevez to stay and form a devastating partnership with Aguero and Dzeko.
This is their chance to stop that happening, and strengthen themselves all at once.
When will a deal happen? Not this week, no matter what tabloids may predict. Sneider is in China of all places playing in Inter’s charity shield equivalent against AC Milan, so look out for concrete news by the middle of next week.
As for City fans, they will have to make do with consoling themselves that they beat a Sneijder inspired Inter 3-0 last week anyway, and they are still many pundits tip for the league title.
